The star has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to save the Britain's grassroots live music spots.

He was presented with the cheque on mid-October as his third album his work was named the best record of the last 12 months.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, more than 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, raising over £100k on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds helped spaces that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading amenities and gear that directly benefitted performers and fans.

"The notion that revenue from concerts in big venues backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has stated.

The musician is among several artists to donate his honor prize money to worthy causes.

In Pulp earned the prize in 1996 for their release Different Class, frontman the singer declared that the group would contribute their prize money to the organization the charity.

In 2002, musician she split her bounty among a few charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," the artist shared with a publication.

Previously, they gave their prize money to the youth organization that developed their band, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year M People donated their prize to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," remarked vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the extra but we could do without the bonus, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the trust revealed it had protected two small stages in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by a national body and supporters who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
